So normally I’m not a huge fan of the Christmas season. Partly because I dislike winter but mostly because of the whole commercialism aspect of it. I stopped giving gifts years ago… well to everyone but my immediate family. (Actually, last year my brothers and I didn’t give gifts to each other at all since we were so poor). I also would usually never be caught mentioning the holiday before Thanksgiving… but in Poland (being a Catholic country) signs of Christmas are everywhere. Lights and decorations and Christmas trees wherever you go. Yes, I said Christmas trees, not “holiday” trees because political correctness doesn’t exist here and people don’t get offended by decorated pine trees! There aren’t a million Santas everywhere or advertisements telling you to waste all your money on pointless, meaningless gifts. It’s what I always wished the season could be like back home. I can’t help but somehow get into the holiday spirit here. For nostalgic reasons, I am sad to be spending the holiday away from my family for the first time. However, I’ll be spending my break with the nuns in Krakow, and for a girl raised Polish Catholic, you really can’t get a truer Christmas than that!
