I know I know… I haven’t been around in foreverrrrr and I’m sorry. Things have been pretty darn hectic. I’m heading to Rome tomorrow for 2 weeks because I need a break from Poland! For those of you who are mad at me for not writing anything lately, you can read my twitter. It’s not as exciting but at least you can keep track of what I’m up to. It’s the...

Japanese Use Obama's Speeches To Learn English →
everybodycares: Aspiring English speakers in Japan have made President Barack Obama’s book of speeches and accompanying CD a national best-seller. In Aichi, central Japan, a Buddhist monk has reportedly been playing the president’s speeches during his temple service. And dozens of students in an English-language class in Tokyo have been memorizing his 2004 Democratic Convention speech to...

You’re just going to have to accept me not writing anything Poland-related for awhile because it’s nearing the end of the semester here and I have papers to write and a Polish language exam to study for and friends I have just made are already leaving and I’m stressed out over whether or not I’ll even have a thesis adviser next year, which would result in me having to leave...

I just returned from the grocery store where they were playing the soundtrack to Mamma Mia!… the movie (seriously Poland?). Somehow the combination of a few days worth of mucus in my stomach from a bad cold and the unsettling tone of Stellan Skarsgård’s singing voice quashed any desire to purchase food.

Real Life Buried Treasure... Not Chocolate! →
Happy Hanukkah!  The Israel Antiquities Authority reported a thrilling find Sunday — the discovery of 264 ancient gold coins in Jerusalem National Park. The coins were minted during the early 7th century. Things like this make me wonder why I ever gave up archaeology. Then I remember sweating my ass off in the middle of a field with no shade in 90 degree weather and 80% humidity, digging...

Mystery of the Green Argyle Sweater
You know that Seinfeld episode where Jerry dates a woman who is always wearing the exact same dress? He thinks maybe she has a closet full of them like Superman and George suggests that maybe Jerry always happens to see her at the end of her laundry cycle. Jerry spills something on her dress in order to get himself invited up to her apartment so she can change and there’s even a photo of her...

chuckmore: thepoliticalpartygirl: by Dee Dee Meyers “What’s bugging me is his intention. He isn’t putting his hand on her ‘chest,’ as most of the articles and conversations about the picture have euphemistically referred to it. Rather, his hand—cupped just so—is clearly intended to signal that he’s groping her breast. And why? Surely, not to signal he finds her attractive. Au contraire. It’s...

Obama's Use of Complete Sentences Stirs... →
Millions of Americans who watched Mr. Obama’s appearance on CBS’s 60 Minutes on Sunday witnessed the president-elect’s unorthodox verbal tic, which had Mr. Obama employing grammatically correct sentences virtually every time he opened his mouth. But Mr. Obama’s decision to use complete sentences in his public pronouncements carries with it certain risks, since after the...

Polish Lesson of the Day: "Andrzejki"
Since this blog is supposed to be about Poland, I will take this opportunity to tell you about the holiday of Andrzejki (St. Andrew’s Day). It takes place on November 30th and on the Eve of Andrzejki (today) it’s kind of like a girls’ night! More in the slumber party kind of girls’ night though… well plus cocktails. St. Andrew is actually the patron saint of Scotland...

Black & Orange People.
Tonight in my little hometown of Maynard, MA is the famed Black & Orange Night (those were our school colors) where literally everyone from the town gathers in the many Maynard bars to basically reminisce and get completely wasted. While I’m not usually a huge fan of this event, I have been known to attend/enjoy a few. Last year I even kinda sorta made out with my high school boyfriend...

So normally I’m not a huge fan of the Christmas season. Partly because I dislike winter but mostly because of the whole commercialism aspect of it. I stopped giving gifts years ago… well to everyone but my immediate family. (Actually, last year my brothers and I didn’t give gifts to each other at all since we were so poor). I also would usually never be caught mentioning the...

Dozens of Cold-Stunned Turtles Wash Up →
The cold-blooded reptiles were hit hard by a cold snap over the weekend. There have been 42 stranded sea turtles reported on the Cape so far this season. The turtles that survive will be rehabilitated at the New England Aquarium in Boston before being transferred to other rehab facilities and eventually reintroduced into the ocean. Ahhh! Poor little dudes! : (

Passive Aggression is Fun!
It’s 6:30am and I’m still awake. My roommate just got in and is, I believe, playing games on her phone while she waits for me to go to bed so she can use my computer. The thing is… she’s going to be waiting awhile because I’m screwing with her. She’s been abusing her computer privileges way too much. I’m not a huge fan of rude and inconsiderate people who...

You Learn Me English?
Today my inner monologue started speaking in broken English. This was, needless to say, a bit of an incentive for me to start writing again. I’m thrilled I have lots of new friends but speaking in simple sentences all day has been wreaking havoc on my English skills! The first couple months I felt like a human thesaurus trying to come up with the simplest synonyms possible for words that I...

Dustin Pedroia wins AL MVP →
Before you say you don’t care about baseball and have no idea who Dustin Pedroia is… let me just tell you that he is an adorably scrappy little 25 year-old weighing in at about a buck 60 and is no more than 5 foot 7. It’s also only his 2nd year in the majors (he won Rookie of the Year last season). You inspired yet?
